When technology’s at its best, it’s invisible. I don’t know who said it first but I think it’s true and we certainly notice it when it breaks or lets us down. We’re getting used to an always on, always connected way of life and we want the internet in our pockets when we go out and about. To do this, many use free wi-fi hotspots which are available in places like bars, cafes, hotels and so on. However, this easy access can be exploited but criminals. This video shows some of the simple precautions you can take to help protect yourself.
Although it was originally written with a mobile workforce in mind, after releasing the video I heard from a contact how many young people have smartphones, but can’t afford contracts with large data downloads, and so they use the free public wi-fi hotspots.
There are also implications for when we’re abroad and choose to use free wi-fi rather than paying extra for data downloads.
