Data Protection Today

Data protection training is often seen as a chore. Once the pass mark’s been achieved, that’s it. Done and dusted. But of course, that misses the point.

We think data protection training should be more about understanding what personal data you deal with, and how and why it’s processed within your organisation. In other words, it’s not an abstract subject. If handling people’s personal data is part of what you do, then protecting it is also a part of your job.

Course elements

Our Data Protection Today video is designed to explain the basics of data protection law. It demonstrates what the principles are and also illustrates our rights as data subjects. A key part of this is explaining data protection as it applies to all of us, and our friends and families, in our daily lives.

The video comes with captions in 17 different languages (Czech, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Korean, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Thai)

An illustrated text version of the video for those who would rather read than watch the video.

This is useful as a quick reference or a reminder of the key points.

This section looks as everyday situations and asks simple questions like what do you think should happen now, or why do think this is the wrong course of action.

The purpose is to explore data protection further and be able to explain why things are done in a certain way.

A series of case studies based on true incidents of data protection breaches. Some of these are centred around large businesses – the types of stories we read in the press. But others are about small businesses or individuals who have broken the rules and been held to account.

This consists of 9 questions which ask – how do you process data in your current role?

For example, which data do you process, what’s the legal basis for processing it, how long is kept, and so on.

This can be done with a team, an individual as part of their onboarding or appraisal, or as part of a workshop (there’s a downloadable and editable copy of the questionnaire).

Some of the questions are straightforward factual questions and others are more about applying the regulations in a situation. Participants can retake the quiz – though it won’t be the same questions.

These resources are primarily aimed at smaller organisations who don’t have their own Learning Management System but need proof that the participants have completed the course.

Information Security

Information security is about keeping information safe from hackers, cybercriminals and anyone else who wants to use the information you hold to make a profit.

Most people are aware of the risks, but often simple security measures are overlooked, bypassed or forgotten.

These resources are designed to show users where many of the common threats occur and what they must do in order to protect themselves.

Equality Diversity and Inclusion

(Including Unconscious Bias, Vulnerable Customers and Reporting Bullying and Harassment)

These are difficult, sensitive and sometimes divisive topics which are often glossed over with ineffective training. However, we believe these are important areas and ones where a balanced view and understanding of the issues is essential in order to have any form of sensible discussion.
